End of a Vi-era

Footballing legend Patrick Vieira has hung up his boots after a sensational playing career spanning 18 years. Emerging from the Cannes youth system at 17 years old, Vieira went on to become one of the most formidable midfielders in World football.

In a statement released on Manchester City’s official site it was revealed that Vieira has accepted an executive role at the club after announcing the end of an outstanding career that yielded one World Cup, one European Championship, three Premier League and four Serie A titles.

The 35-year-old former France international was released from his playing contract at City at the end of last season, making 45 appearances in total. His last came as a late substitute in City's FA Cup final win against Stoke City in May.

On hearing the news former boss Arsene Wenger said: "You can only have lot of respect for what Patrick has achieved. His career is sensational. He was an exceptional player for us.”
