First Premiership Weekend

First Premiership Weekend

The first weekend of the Barclay's Premier League is now over and it has been a very exciting one. Here is a review of Sunday’s games.

First Day Of EPL: Upset, thrashings, draws and a late Goal!

The long summer wait is finally over. The first day of the Barclay's Premier League was yesterday and what a day it was! There 19 goals in all and included not one but two 5-0 wins.

Here are the results from the games on Saturday 18th August.

Arsenal 0 - 0 Sunderland
Fulham 5 - 0 Norwich
QPR 0 - 5 Swansea
Reading 1 - 1 Stoke
West Brom 3 - 0 Liverpool
West Ham 1 - 0 Aston Villa
Newcastle 2 - 1 Tottenham

Great win for West Brom

West Brom 3 – 0 Liverpool

Liverpool went into the game undoubtedly the favourites. However, this was not to be the win they had expected, and there will be some fans out there who will be asking questions. In all fairness, West Brom appeared to play the better football and got a deserved win.

A fantastic half volley from Zoltan Gera put West Brom ahead just before half time. The ball was not cleared well enough, and Gera controlled and fired the ball into the top corner.

Shane Long could have made it two when he was fouled by Daniel Agger in the box and was awarded a penalty. Agger was sent off as a result, but Long failed to scored the penalty.

Long was 'fouled' again later in the game, this time by Martin Skrtel. West Brom were given another penalty and this time Peter Odemwingie scored from the spot.

The substitute Romelu Lukaku, who is on loan from Chelsea, scored a third - and by now there was no way back for Liverpool.
Can Liverpool recover from this?

Newcastle win with Late Penalty
Hatem Ben Arfa was fouled entering the box from the left hand side with just 13 minutes to go. At this time the score was 1-1 and the game looked to be a draw.
Ben Arfa took the penalty himself and drove the ball confidently into the bottom right hand corner and earned a win for his team.
Tottenham started off well and hit the woodwork twice. However, Demba Ba was the first on the score-sheet putting Newcastle 1-0 up with a fantastic goal. Ba controlled the ball with his back to goal at the edge of the 18 yard box, turned and curled the ball into the far corner.
Jermaine Defoe managed to equalise when an Aaron Lennon cross was headed towards goal by a Newcastle Defender. The Defender was under pressure from Defoe causing the mistake. Newcastle Goalkeeper Krul got down to stop the header but Defoe was quickest to the loose ball and scored from close range.
Just 4 minutes later Newcastle were awarded a penalty that they converted to win the game.
Can Newcastle finish in the top 4 this season?

Alex Song To Join Barcelona.

Alex Song To Join Barcelona.

Cameroon international Alex song could be on his way to Spain where he will re-unite with former Arsenal player Cesc Fabregas at Barcelona.

Song, 24, is rumoured to make the move very soon and may even join Barcelona as early as by the end of this week.

When Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger was asked about this, he did not deny the claim. He was also asked if Nuri Sahin was a replacement for Song, to which he replied, “Both can happen.”

Song has played for the London team since the age of 17, and has more than 200 caps for the side. This could be a big loss for the team if they do not replace him with another strong holding Midfieder.

If Song does join Barcelona, who do you think could replace him?

QPR sign Champions League Medal holder

Queens Park Rangers have signed free agent Jose Bosingwa on a 3 year contract.

The Portuguese International player had previously been playing with Champions League holders Chelsea, but did not sign a new contract with them at the end of the season. This made him a free agent.

When asked about joining QPR he said "I had the pick of many Clubs, but the project here excites me greatly.”

When asked about former Club Chelsea he added, "I played for Chelsea for four years and I love Premier League football and the supporters."

Fulham have made 8 signings this summer - do you think they can finish in the top half of the English Premier League?

Luka Modric looks set to join Real Madrid

Luka Modric looks set to join Real Madrid

It would seem that Modric, 26, is almost sure to leave Tottenham and join Real Madrid. Madrid have raised their offer to £30 million and apparently Tottenham have accepted.

Modric is said to be having a medical within the next 48 hours and if everything is clear then he will join last year's Spanish champions Real Madrid.

Tottenham Hotspurs' manager seems to be be ready for the sale as he is already lining up replacements. He is currently looking at either Porto's Joao Moutinho or Rennes' Midfielder Yann M'Vila.

Liverpool set to Sign new Winger

Liverpool set to Sign new Winger

The Moroccon international Oussama Assaidi is about to put pen to paper and sign for Liverpool. Assaidi is currently at the Dutch side Heerenveen and the Club announced his possible arrival.

He will have to do a medical assessment first, but if he passes he will be Brendan Rodgers' third signing this summer joining forward Fabio Borini from Roma and Midfielder Joe Allen from Swansea.
Assaidi, 24, seems to be a good signing as he scored 20 goals in 68 games for his previous Club despite playing in a wide role.

Sahin - Liverpool or Arsenal?

The Real Madrid Midfielder from Turkey was heavily linked with a move on loan to Liverpool, and some sources were even saying he was due to complete the paperwork yesterday.
However, if other sources are to be believed it would seem that Arsenal have managed to make him reconsider and perhaps choose to join the Gunners on loan instead.
It would seem Arsenal want to know if their holding Midfielder Alex Song is going to leave and join Barcelona before he makes his decision. If he does, then they would require the services of Nuri Sahin.
Wenger believes that because Arsenal will be participating in the UEFA Champions League this season, and Liverpool are not, that he is more likely to choose the London side.

Van Persie Deal Agreed
Manchester United have announced that they have agreed on a deal of around £24 million for Netherlands striker Robin Van Persie. The deal will be completed if they can agree on personal terms and if he passes a medical test later this week.

Last week it seemed that Van Persie would stay at his beloved Club Arsenal and was encouraged by their new signings of Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla.

However, Wenger had other ideas and told Van Persie on Sunday that if a deal can be agreed on then he would be sold.

Do you think Van Persie fit in at Manchester United?

In other news, Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba has retired from football due to recent health problems.
England victorious over Italy.

England managed to beat Italy 2-1 last night. This will please England fans as they were knocked out of the UEFA Euro Championship by Italy in a penalty shoot out.

Ashley Young was the only player to feature who played on that night. Jack Butland, 19, became the youngest goalkeeper to earn a full cap. The other players making their first appearances for England in this completely new side were - Norwich's John Ruddy, Manchester United's Tom Cleverley, Chelsea's Bertrand and Tottenham's Jake Livermore.

Italy was the first to score after dominating the early play. Daniele De Rossi headed the ball past Butland from an Alessandro Diamanti corner.

England was quick to reply, also scoring from a corner. This time Frank Lampard's corner was converted well by Phil Jagielka. Jagielka got low and scored with a driving header.

The game looked set for a draw, but England gained momentum and Gary Cahill scored only to find out it had been disallowed. England substitute Jermaine Defoe was put through by a James Milner pass and scored in style.

Should England keep this side of young players? Do you think England can win the next World Cup?

Wigan Sign Kone

Wigan sign Kone

Arouna Kone has completed a move from Spanish side Levante to English team Wigan for an undisclosed fee.
Kone, 28, scored 15 goals for Levante last season and helped them to finish 6th in the league. Wigan fans will be hoping he can do the same for them and replace Rodallega who has joined Fulham.
Who would you rather have in your team - Kone or Rodallega? Which player will score more goals this season?

Ox to miss England friendly
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will not play in the friendly against Italy on Wednesday because he has injured his ankle.
Oxlade-Chamberlain is the third person to pull out of the friendly, with Joe Hart and Daniel Sturridge also unable to play.
Mario Balotelli is also unavailable to play in the match for Italy because of an eye infection.
Daniel Agger wants to stay.

Danish defender Daniel Agger wants to stay at Liverpool but fears the decision may not be his to make.

Liverpool may have to sell him if Manchester City match their asking price. City have already made 2 bids and have had both attempts rejected.

Agger told Danish newspaper Politiken. "I'd rather stay, I can't imagine playing for any other club in England but you never know if the club think it's better to sell."

Given Retires

Given Retires
Shay Given has retired from international football. The goalkeeper from the Republic of Ireland will no longer represent his country.
He is currently the most capped player with 125 caps. He described the decision as "extremely difficult".
He also said, "I have dedicated 16 years of my life to my country and I have a great affinity with Giovanni Trapattoni's Squad."
It would seem that he is sad to make the decision but will continue to follow his side. He went on to say, "I will continue to be Ireland's biggest fan and wish the lads well as they embark upon their new campaign."

United in left-back hunt

Manchester United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson is determined to bring a in a new left-back to Old Trafford before the start of the new Premier League season.

United had chased Everton's star player Leighton Baines, but the Toffees have refused to budge on their £15million asking price. Unfortunately, the Red Devils are unwilling to pay more than £12million for the 27-year-old and the deal looks set to collapse.

Sir Alex has now turned his attention to other another quality full-back - Chelsea's Ashley Cole is the man on United's radar, according to reports in the UK.

Chelsea are yet to offer Cole an extension on his current deal, which is just one year away from expiring.

FWF Magazine understands that no talks have been scheduled between Cole and the Club which means the England International could walk away at the end of this coming season.

Cole is said to not be pushing for a new deal and is happy to see things out.

Due to Fabio Da Silva's departure to QPR on a season-long loan, Manchester United only has one recognised left-back in the form of Patrice Evra within their Senior Squad.

Madrid move for Modric but Levy says no

According to reports in the United Kingdom, Luka Modric has told his friends that he is disappointed with his current employers. Tottenham had apparently told Modric that he could leave this summer after they rejected offers from London rivals ‘Chelsea’ before the 2011-12 season.

Real Madrid Manager Jose Mourinho has tried personally to take control of a reported deal for the Croatian International and has spoken with the Tottenham Chairman to see if he can move the deal forward.

Ideally, Mourinho would like Modric to be a Real Madrid player in time to face LA Galaxy in the USA next week.

Real Madrid have informed Spurs they will be willing to part with £27m for Modric but Paris Saint Germain are reportedly preparing £40m offer, which would complicate the deal dramatically.

Madrid are keen to sell Brazilian superstar Kaka in order to help generate the funds needed to entice Modric away from London.

Mourinho, who knows Levy (Tottenham Chairman) from his days spent in London with Chelsea, believes his intervention may help give Modric the green light to move to the Bernabeu.

Football fans should keep a close eye on proceedings within the coming weeks...

RVP Gunner be a Devil

Reports within the United Kingdom suggest Robin Van Persie could make a shock move to Manchester, opting for the red of United ahead of rivals City. RVP has informed Arsene Wenger that he wants his future concluded before the team are due to fly to Malaysia on Saturday for their pre-season tour.

However, Manchester United could be priced out of the move by the £30 million price tag firmly attached to Arsenal's star-striker. Many believe Wenger would not be happy to sell his prize asset to United, a Team he has gone head-to-head with on countless occasions in the Premier League.

If Alex Ferguson is put off by the huge asking price that the Gunners are demanding for the services of Van Persie, the door maybe open to Manchester City who wouldn't struggle to construct a bid of that size. Juventus had originally been linked with a move for the Dutch International but now appear to be chasing Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic who would be available for a fee in the region of £23million (instead).

Head over to the Futera Facebook page now to take part in our LIVE Quiz regarding the future of RVP and let us know which Club you think he may leave Arsenal for!!!

LeBron James on Liverpool FC

NBA legend LeBron James believes Liverpool will struggle to compete for honours this season.
Although the club invested heavily in its playing staff last term, the Reds endured a disappointing year, finishing in eighth place behind local rivals Everton and a massive 37 points adrift of first placed Manchester City.
James recently signed a deal with Liverpool owners 'Fenway Sports Group' making him a minority shareholder. He said, "It’s a difficult time for the club right now, Liverpool are a team in a period of transition at the moment, so I don’t know what they can achieve."
"I love football. I love to watch it, read up on it. I fell in love with it after watching it. I have a new respect for what they do, the shape they’re in. It’s just like basketball where you have to be a team first of all."
"If you see some of the plays they make out there, they’re kind of basketball plays. They cut and move, just with their feet. They’re passing with their feet while we pass with our hands, to try and set someone up for a goal. I definitely love the sport."
Do you agree with Lebron, wil Liverpool be able to compete this season?

Tottenham appoint Andre Villas-Boas on a three year contract

Andre Villas-Boas has been appointed the new Tottenham Hotspur manager on a yet to be disclosed contract thought you be worth anything up to £15 million over three years.

The new manager though won’t be presented to the media until next week when the spurs’ players return to the club for pre season training. The 34 year old is the same age as defender William Gallas, four years younger than reserve goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini and seven years younger than first choice between the posts Brad Freidel.

The Portuguese was sacked by Chelsea only four months ago, but preceding his spell at Stamford Bridge he kept Academica in the Primeira Liga and won the treble with FC Porto.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy had this to say about Villas-Boas’ appointment: “I am delighted that Andre has agreed to become our new Head Coach.  He has an outstanding reputation for his technical knowledge of the game and for creating well-organised teams capable of playing football in an attractive and attacking style.  Andre shares our long-term ambitions and ethos of developing players and nurturing young talent, and he will be able to do so now at a new world class Training Centre.”

The man himself added: “Tottenham Hotspur is a great club with a strong tradition and fantastic support, both at home and throughout the world.  I feel privileged to be its coach.  For me, this is one of the most exciting coaching positions in the Premier League.  I have had several discussions with the Chairman and the Board and I share their vision for the future progress of the Club.  This is a squad any coach would love to work with and together I believe we can bring success in the seasons ahead."

Coaches Jose Mario Rocha and Daniel Sousa have also followed AVB to White Hart Lane.

Ben Shave (@benshave), a football reporter based in Portugal wishes AVB luck: ‘Good luck André. Hope he gets more time this, er, time.’

Phil McNulty (@philmcnulty), chief football writer for BBC Sport gives his two cents: ‘Initial reaction from most Spurs fans to AVB seems favourable - don't forget this time last year he was one of Europe's most wanted coaches.  How times change. AVB will now presumably be telling Luka Modric what a rotten idea it is to even think of playing for Chelsea.’

Who Scored.com (@whoscored) has a stat which will maybe pour cold water on optimistic Spurs fans though: ‘Andre Villas-Boas: Won 50% of his games in all competitions while in charge at Chelsea, in which time Spurs won 56% of theirs.’

What do you think about Andre Villas-Boas’ appointment at White Hart Lane?

'Stab in the Beck'

David Beckham has been left out of the Team GB squad.
Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy and Micah Richards have been included in Stuart Pearce's 18-man squad as the three over-23 players.
"Naturally I'm very disappointed," said Beckham. "There will be no bigger supporter of the team than me."
It had been expected that the 37-year-old former England captain would represent Team GB at the London Olympics due to his involvement in bringing the games to the United Kingdom.
Players who went to the European Championship are not available for selection. The remaining 15 players must have been born after January 1, 1989.

Head over to our Facebook page to discuss Beckham's exclusion.

Spain through to third final (in a row)!

Cesc Fabregas sent his Spainish side through to the final after a penalty shoot-out victory over rivals Portugal.

Ronaldo and co. frustrated the Spanish whilst playing some enviable football and looked capable of beating the reigning champions with a brilliant first half display, the two sides were evenly matched in the second half and Spain went on to call the shots in extra-time but they were unable to find away past Rui Patricio.

The game went to a shoot-out and first two penalties were saved, another miss from Portugal meant that Cristiano Ronaldo did not even get to take a spot-kick. Fabregas scored Spain's fifth and deciding penalty for a 4-2 shoot-out triumph.

Spain will play Italy in the final on Sunday.

Giroud is a Gunner

Olivier Giroud will join Arsenal on a long-term deal from the start of July.

Giroud, who has featured for his national side at Euro 2012, has reportedly agreed a £13m move to North London which will be concluded at the start of July.  The Striker hit 25 goals last season and helped secure the Ligue 1 title for Montpellier.

Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger told Arsenal’s official website: “We are delighted to have secured the signing of Olivier Giroud. He has a very good physical presence and is exceptional in the air, with a great work ethic....

We are excited about Olivier joining us and he will add an additional dimension to our attacking options next season....

He has proved that he is capable of performing at the top level with club and country, and we saw what a big influence he was in Montpellier’s championship-winning side last season.”
Many Arsenal fans will be excited by this transfer and will believe they have got a player with great quality and potential on their hands.

Giroud said: “I am delighted to be here at Arsenal and to be part of one of the great teams in English football. It's a huge satisfaction to join this great Club and it’s been a dream since I was young to play in the Premier League.

“I was attracted by the philosophy of football and Arsene Wenger’s 'touch' at this club. I have always admired Arsenal with its great history and reputation, and I now hope to achieve great things here.”

It will be interesting to see how Giroud links up fellow new forward Lukas Podolski, who agreed to join Arsenal prior to the Euros.

Could this move spark an end to Robin Van Persie's time at the Club? Arsenal have now purchased two strikers, could they be planning for life without their star man? Discuss below and on our facebook page!

UFEA EURO 2012 SO FAR!

Euro 2012 kicks off with a bang!!!

Euro 2012 in Poland and the Ukraine has blasted off to a flyer and we’re loving every minute of it here at Futera.  Not only have we had the excitement of the launch of our new website for FWF ONLINE (Play for free at www.futeraworldfootball.com) - but we’ve also seen some of Europe’s greatest footballers take to the field for one of the biggest prizes in International football.

Here's an overview of the action so far

Group A

The tournament kicked off with co-hosts Poland entertaining former winners, Greece. Substitute goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton was the unlikely hero after he saved a penalty save from Greek captain Giorgos Karagounis which give the co-hosts a 1-1 draw in this incident-packed encounter.  Tyton replaced first choice goalkeeper Szczesny after he was sent for an early bath for bringing down Salpingidis in the box on 69 minutes. Tyton's first job was to save a penalty - which he did brilliantly!

Poland 1 - 1 Greece

Then Russia hammered the Czech Republic with an outstanding attacking display. Two goals from Alan Dzagoev secured a 4-1 win in the second game in Group A, kicking off Russia’s Euro 2012 campaign in impressive fashion.

 Russia 4 -1 Czech Republic

Group B

Denmark stunned Holland to claim the first upset of Euro 2012 in Group B at the Metalist Stadium in Kharkiv on Saturday.  Michael Krohn-Dehli scored the game's only goal mid-way through the first half, as Denmark recorded a first win over the Dutch since 1967.

Denmark 1-0 Holland

Mario Gomez handed Germany a 1-0 win over Portugal on Saturday in their opening Euro 2012 match. Many experts from across the football world believe this Group is the Tournament's most challenging. Germany play Holland next.
 Germany 1-0 Portugal

Group C

Holders Spain were held to a 1-1 draw by Italy in Gdansk on Sunday in the opening  game of  Group C. Fernando Torres missed two glorious chances after coming off the bench. Italy took the lead on 61 minutes via Antonio Di Natale, but it wasn’t long before the world champions equalised through former Arsenal hit man Cesc Fabregas.

Spain 1-1 Italy

After 24 long years since Ireland last qualified for a European Championship they were brought back down to earth with a bang by Croatia.  Everton Striker Nikica Jelavic helped his side to a win against Ireland on Sunday in their Group C opener.

Rep. of Ireland 1 - 3 Croatia

Group D

France and Group D counterparts England played out a hard-fought game in Donetsk after Joleon Lescott put the three lions in front after half an hour.  England could only hold the lead for nine minutes before Samir Nasri struck from the edge of the area and England never really looked like restoring their advantage. The game ended 1-1, a decent result for both sides.

France 1 - 1 England

Legendary Andrei Shevchenko scored two headers as Ukraine came from behind to beat Sweden, securing an historic victory in their first European Championship game and one played on home soil.

Ukraine 2 -1 Sweden

One things for sure, if the next round of fixtures is anything to go by we're all in for a treat!
